Exciting things are happening at Sissy’s Southern Kitchen & Bar in the Knox Henderson neighborhood. Chef Chris Ostlund has taken post as Chef de Cuisine, James Olivarez is now General Manager and lunch is served.

I was invited in to get first tastes of what is to become a afternoon spell spot and everything was on par. Chef Ostlund is pushing a fresh take on a primarily starch friendly menu by working with seasonal product and using techniques such as poaching to lighten things up for lunch. Lisa Garza admits that the buckets of fried chicken will remain a menu favorite even at lunch but hopes that the new service will garner fans of the solid salads and signature sandwiches. Garza also hinted at a possible addition of brunch but no dates set. Seasonal specials to go along with lunch at the moment include the board items and a Pear and Raspberry Cobbler. Yum!
Here’s my take on a few new additions:

Muffaletta Sandwich with layers of provolone, ham, hot coppa, mortadella, salami and a sweet salty olive relish. This dish, done in traditional New Orleans style was top notch, kick you in your mouth greatness. The messy nature of this one really makes all the flavors combine to a southern bite.

Pickled Gulf Shrimp Salad featuring shrimp steeped overnight in a ‘secret spices’ mix and served over a crisp spinach salad.

Herb Poached Snapper Nicoise in salad form with green beans, red onion, boiled new potato and olives with a tangy lemon vinaigrette
Crispy Catish and Oyster Po’ Boys served with with Bubba’s gribiche or remoulade are sure to be a simple mans favorite!

A crunchy Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich inspired by one of Garza’s favorite down home drive-thru spots with crispy onions and savory cream gravy was a table favorite
The dish I ordered, a Lump Crab Cake Salad with sweet corn, pimento and fresh herb salad was just right and the perfect portion for a light yet tasty lunch.
Lunch will run Monday through Saturday 11am-2pm
