You’ve partied on the patio out back and reveled in the once crowded DJ room of this space. The location formerly known as T.A.B.C is now Boxwood Tap & Grill. This cute corner spot retains the charm of the State & Thomas Neighborhood it’s situated in. With Tommy DeAlano & Shawn Egerton at the helm of the managing team, it has serious backing and passion for providing a great experience and excellent cuisine.
The 80-year-old historic building has been restored to its original craftsmanship with exposed natural brick, soft lighting, tin ceilings and hardwood floors. The interior space features a large bar, a spacious banquette and cozy booths. Televisions throughout the space allow guests to catch their favorite sporting events in any area of the bar. The spacious patio will be excellent when the weather warms and features its own bar and many places to enjoy refreshing cocktails and food.
On a Friday evening, the dining room was packed with all ages. The warm feeling of the space lends itself well to the menu executive chef Jason Wade has created. Coming from Whiskey Cake in Plano, Wade knows a thing or two about providing a chic comfort dining experience. Our cocktails arrive shortly after we order them. We decide on “The Woods” made with Rittenhouse Rye, Elderflower, Creole & Orange Bitters. It’s a kick of rye and a smooth over from the bitters that completes a great start to the meal. We also tried the “Highland Smash”, made with Dewars, Honey Apple Moonshine, Apple, Mint and Lemon juice then topped with soda. Sweet and smoky.
Next came appetizers, of which we sampled the Sweet Potato Hummus (Spiced Pecans, Feta and Lavash) that was the perfect combination of sweet and savory, paired perfectly with the feta. The Italian Flatbread (Italian Sausage, Mushrooms, Onions, White Cheddar, Parmesan) was spicy and crunchy. A fantastic start to the meal.
The entree lists spans from enormous sandwiches, to fresh fish and full sized salads. After perusing the menu, we landed on the Grilled Salmon with roasted brussels sprouts and pomegranate vinaigrette. This is hands down one of my new favorite salmon dishes in Dallas. The delicate fish was the perfect accompaniment to the tangy vinaigrette and charred brussels sprouts. The turkey burger (a crowd pleaser) was another winner as well. Recommended by our bubbly waiter, Sadie, the burger comes with cranberry relish and nestled in a challah bun. Infused with great flavor, this burger can do no wrong.
Finally, because my sweet tooth is bigger than Texas, the skillet cookie arrive to the table. This glorious and guilt laden mountain of goodness is a compilation of chocolate chip cookie, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel and toffee. Yum!
Everything is on par for this neighborhood joint where great service, fresh flavors and bar craftsmanship come together in perfect harmony.
