On a cozy evening on the quiet Oak Cliff corner of Beckley Ave, a string lit house labeled “VH” illuminates the boulevard. This house once played scene to celebrity chef Matt McCalister and his restaurant Campo, then it became bar/restaurant The Outpost, and in its 2nd reincarnation it now shines as VH Oak Cliff. It’s a charmingly different departure for owner Victor Hugo, former manager at Al Biernat’s, but he captures the neighborhood with ease. A family owned and operated restaurant, VH blends eclectic American Cuisine with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Must try appetizers include light and delicious Sweet Potato Johnny Cakes topped with Blue crab, mango and sweet corn relish. We also sampled the nightly special of Duck and Goat Cheese Taquitos with avocado crema and cascabel salsa. The drink menu is playful and tastefully done with a nod to Victors wife, the ‘Nice and Brie-Z’ made with New Amsterdam Gin, St. Germain, Lemon, Splash of Grapefruit is classic. Get the ‘Angry Texan’ which combines Whiskey, Angry Orchard Crisp Apple Ale, Muddled Apples and Basil to warm your fall evening.
Mains included a a juicy, if not a tad bit under cooked Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin on a bed of Sweet potato puree, green chile succotash and Maple-Sherry reduction. We also sampled a delicious Grilled Salmon dish with Asparagus, potato and watercress salad and dill-dijon cream sauce. The flow of the meal was executed by staff and service who kept things moving without ever feeling rushed. Might I add, the inside dining room was completely full and we spent our meal on a perfectly comfortable deck outside. We capped the meal with an amazing VH Exclusive German Chocolate cake and warm Chocolate Chip Pretzel Cookies. Get here now and see why the 3rd time is a charm for 1115 N Beckley Ave!
