3rd Annual CRE8 Design Challenge and Fashion Show

It’s not often that I receive an email that ups my interest as much as one I just received. So read on.

This Friday at the historic Granada Theatre, IIDA Dallas Fort Worth City Center presents the 3rd Annual CRE8 Design Challenge and Fashion Show. The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) is a professional networking and educational association committed to enhancing the quality of life through excellence in Interior Design.

The challenge is to create a garment in 8 days. Not just any garment, but a garment that celebrates the connection between interior design and fashion! This year’s theme is Zodiac Signs. Each sign possesses a distinct set of personality traits that sets it apart from the rest. Are you an optimistic Sagittarius, a charming Libra, or a secretive Scorpio? All of the stars will align on April 26th for a good vs. evil showdown on the runway. What’s your sign?

Each Design Team will be randomly paired with 2 Garment Underwriters – 1 softgood and 1 hardgood manufacturer. They will work together to create a couture garment out of products like carpet, tile, and wallcovering!

All garments will be constructed in 8 days and showcased at the CRE8 Fashion Show on Friday.

Tickets are available here and I’ve been told they will sell out!

Good Food, Live Music in Uptown at The Rustic: Opening this Spring

What happens when a Texas music legend, meets a couple of restaurant partners and they visit Uptowns’ West Village district? Enter The Rustic.  A brand new restaurant and live music venue coming this spring to West Village. Read on for details…

Free Range Concepts partners, Josh Sepkowitz and Kyle Noonan announce their newest project, The Rustic, scheduled to open Spring of 2013 in Uptown at the prime corner lot of Lemmon Avenue and North Central Expressway in the West Village area.  Sepkowitz and Noonan, the team behind Bowl & Barrel, have partnered with Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, Pat Green and local businessman Brian Manion to open a full service restaurant and bar that will feature a dynamic outdoor “backyard” for eating, drinking and listening to live music.

“The Rustic will be a place to relax and socialize with friends and family and will be known for its three distinct qualities: great music, a vibrant patio and an excellent dining experience,” explains Sepkowitz.

With a live music venue outside, The Rustic will be able to provide a form of entertainment that few restaurant concepts can offer. The size and layout of the patio will offer the flexibility to accommodate both casual dining and large outdoor concerts, yet the primary focus of The Rustic will always be exceptional food and drinks.

Celebrated chef, Sharon Hage will be working with The Rustic team to develop the menu.  Noonan explains, “We will showcase kitchen and bar menus with roots reaching deep into the Texas soil. We are committed to using only beef, poultry and game from local ranchers, produce from local farmers, and the largest selection of Texas beers found anywhere.”  The Rustic will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week.

According to Neal Sleeper, President of Cityplace Company, the master developer of the area, “We have wanted to add a live music venue in the West Village area for many years.  The site selected for this new project has several beautiful old post oaks, and the site contours provide a natural amphitheater with Uptown Station and the trolley turntable as a backdrop.  The Rustic will add a great deal of energy to the area and we are thrilled to welcome them to the neighborhood.”

Certain to be one of the coolest things to happen to Uptown in quite sometime, I can’t wait to see what this does for the area. Dallasites have always proven to have an affinity for Green and his folk country music. Add that together with some good cookin and a blazing bar and The Rustic can’t miss.

Javiers brings the real Mexico City to Dallas

Javiers Gourmet Mexican located in the Park Cities is unlike most Mexican restaurants in Dallas. The reason for that is its dedication to serving up completely authentic Mexico City and Central Mexican style dishes. Everything from the trio of appetizers featuring chili rubbed quail and habanero salsa, to the salsa verde that kicks with a sweet touch. The scene is one out of a Penelope Cruz movie set in the deserts of Mexico. A classy cigar room paired with a rustic wood grain bar sets the tone for the restaurant which keeps its historic value in high gear.

This particular evening, we were celebrating the birthday of a local television personality and the Mexican way of doing such is to drink as many famous Javiers margaritas as possible. Once you’ve tasted the refreshing citrus flavors of this traditional South of the border libation, it’s impossible to stop sipping. The cocktail, made with your choice of silver, reposado or Anejo, are not your normal lime green artificial Tex-mex mix. The margaritas set the tone for a memorable Mexican evening.

For my main entrée, I chose the Penchuga De Polla. The dish traditionally calls for juicy roasted chicken smothered in a peppery red sauce, onions and peppers. This one did the trick and was accompanied by a bite of cotija and guacamole as well. Of course, black beans and rices paired up with most dishes here. The delicious flare of this dish really shows diners how much Javiers cares for its presentation and taste. Other main options included a savory Red Snapper and a array of Filet of Beef combinations.

Having grown up in a household where Mexican food was ever present, I found a piece of home in this Park Cities joint and I can’t wait to go back soon and explore it more. Gracias, Javiers!

VIP Grand Opening: Timothy Oulton

The curtains were pulled back on the brand new Timothy Oulton Flagship store in Dallas last night. The jam packed (literally no room to move) event, held at the new location off Henderson, was one to remember. I told you earlier about this British rooted home décor wonderland, and I lived the Queens dream last night in fair Dallas. The entrance was complete with hard to miss metallic letters spelling out the namesake, 2 beefeater guards to keep things under control and a Rolls Royce fit for a jubilee. Talk about detail. Stepping in to Timothy’s expertly executed space, party goers were treated to Union Jacks, Texas Flags and an enormous fish tank complete with what else, a ‘Yellow Submarine’.

Other noteable sightings include vintage typewriters featuring typed Beatles lyrics, how cool! The Flagship store is separated into sections with names like ‘The Sports Club’ and ‘Metro Room’. The dessert lover in me was enamored with ‘The Bistro’ which store employees promise will host afternoon tea, cocktail parties and Wi-Fi for those of us who need time to think a purchase through. They had a HUGE selection of sweets and perfect tea companions and a whole café seating area to boot!

From framed shadowboxes, plush leather sofas and a full bounty of reclaimed wood pieces (their signature), this space was a true showcase piece. Heck, they even had a miniature train track with a live train running around the entire ceiling. Bizarre? Maybe. Conversation starting? Always.

Of course, the Moet flowed and the Lisa Garza/Jeffery Hobbs creations (even two whole tables and a 20 foot feast of artisan cheeses, fruits and Royal style finger foods!) were heavily passed.

The crowd was certainly buzzing with pleasure with a new face of home furnishings in town. For Brits away from their beloved England, a slice of home is here.
