Beyond500 Creates New Fitness Curve in Dallas

It’s 7:15 am on a Monday morning and I don’t know whether to laugh, cry or both. I’ve just finished my first class at the hot new Beyond500 Pilates Hybrid Interval Training PHIT-ness studio on Henderson Ave. Little did I know when owner and boss lady Brandi Marino invited me in to try out the brand new fitness regimen that I would be running on a hamster wheel. That’s right, Beyond500 brings a state-of-the-art new fitness ‘machine’ called ‘The Curve’ with its new studio. The apparatus is powered by you, essentially a self-propelled treadmill that’s 30 percent more effective than conventional models.

The workout changes daily, and there are three different formats; Double-Dare, Stack, and 3X3. My class was the 3X3 model which consists of switching between a circuit on the treadmill and a weights mix on the chair. Beyond500 explains the interval training as:

  • BURN in The Hot Seat – stabilize and isolate your Pilates torso in the chair
  • BLAST on The Human Hamster Wheel – you provide the power on the self-propelled treadmill that’s 30 percent more effective than the conventional model
  • BUILD with The(kettle) Bell – strengthen and tone those muscles all over

I found myself getting in the groove pretty easily but Mitchell, who happens to own CitySurf in Uptown as well, definitely kept me on my toes and a sweaty mess. That’s all hard work though, right? The group class format allows even the most fitness shy to break out of the shell and really feel the burn. An intro class is $15, and they currently have a special rate of $50 for two weeks unlimited.  Other membership options are available, too. So guys, girls and whoever might be eating their holiday calories (not me, clearly), get ready to love the curves and head over to Beyond500 for a new kind of workout.

Pulse and Pedal at Flywheel Summer Community Appreciation Weekend

It’s an odd juxtaposition when Summer hits Dallas. Locals start strongly reconsidering having that last cookie or all you can drink happy hour and gym prices go through the roof. Well, Flywheel Sports in Plano has just the solution for both of those things. That’s right, Summer pricing is here.

Flywheel Sports Plano’s special summer pricing features new class package rates and membership specials valid for a limited time following the Fly into Summer event. Individual classes will now begin at $20, with prices dropping as low as $15 per class when purchased in a package. New members to Plano can try their first month as an unlimited Flywheel and FlyBarre member for just $99, valid for purchase from June 7-13. The first class at Flywheel is always free.

Special Flywheel classes include a black light GLOW ride on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and a Musical Bikes ride (sounds dangerously fun) featuring 10 Flywheel instructors rotating off the instructor platform for a 60 minute class where no rider will know what happens next. FlyBarre pulsers can bring their guy for free to the Jay Z vs Beyonce FlyBarre class on Saturday at 3:00 pm by emailing their RSVP to plano@flywheelsports.com. For a full schedule of events, please visit the Flywheel Texas Facebook page.

All classes throughout the weekend will feature giveaways and promotions from community partners such as Eatzi’s, Vita Coco, Legends Popcorn, DryBar and Blue Mesa Grill and Catering.

To reserve a spot in one of the Fly into Summer specialty classes, guests can reserve online at texas.flywheelsports.com or email plano@flywheelsports.com for reservations and pricing information.

Allison Collister “My favorite way to stay active is swimming! Just recently discovered it and am really enjoying it.”

Thanks to all who entered!

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

It’s Wednesday, it’s officially Springtime in Dallas and before we know it swimsuit season is going to be here. ‘Tis the season for extra gym sessions, juice cleanses and sneaking cupcakes into the house! Oops.

To celebrate the change in seasons, I’m giving away this amazing FlyBarre 5 class pack. ($118 value)

FlyBarre (part of the Flywheel family) settled into Plano just last year as the first of it’s kind in Texas. Recently, FlyBarre unveiled its brand new, more intense and exhilarating cousin FlyBarre Sport. Now don’t get me wrong, it took a little convincing to get me into a class full of women but if Nick Cannon can do it then I can too. It’s a full on body sculpting workout with lots of repetition with lighter weights.

What makes FlyBarre sport different than the regular barre classes? Cardio. There are three sets and your legs are like jello from all the other activities you’ve done, and you want to die and/or walk out in protest. But this is how your body will change. Stick it out, suck it up, results will follow.

Entering the classes I am always excited to see what kind of variations my usual instructor Cristin is going to bring and by the end I am happily sore and satisfied knowing that I got my workout in for the day. These classes are for guys and gals so have no preconceived notions about who FlyBarre is targeting themselves towards.

I’m excited to be giving one away to a lucky reader; read below for details on how to enter to win!

VITAL Fitness Expands Class Line-Up

vital

I popped in yesterday to check out the 2 month old studio and I walked out a changed man. Vital Fitness Studio at The Joule Hotel has become a trendsetter for all things yoga and fitness in Downtown Dallas. Just recently, with the addition of a few new instructors they’ve been able to expand their class offerings and target new areas of fitness practice. With classes like Energizing, Detox, Soothing and Restorative Yoga, you can’t go wrong. I popped in yesterday to take a core fitness class with instructor Neil Patel. This is one of two more fitness centric classes, the other being Cardio Sculpt.

vital2

The hour long class was filled with core strengthening movements and centering yoga techniques to build stability. What sounded like a piece of cake actually ending up pushing me to my limits in all the right ways. Vital‘s way of teaching is a rarity in Dallas.

With small classes comes greater opportunity for instructors to really interact with students and guide them through the practice in a helpful way. Case in point? Yesterday I walked in as someone who had done yoga before and thought I knew the ropes, but when Patel asked us to work on headstands I shrunk.  After a few helpful hints, everyone in the class including myself had the headstand nearly perfected. I’ll definitely be back for more! This chic studio has it all. I highly recommend it to any yoga and fitness lovers in Dallas who are looking to be challenged in a safe environment.

Shape Up for Summer: Flywheel Sports

Friends, coworkers and just about everyone I come in contact with knows my love of being active. I am a half-marathon finisher and an avid runner but when I crave something different in my workout plan I know where to go, Flywheel.

It all began in 2012 when I took my first ride, and I haven’t looked back yet. Staying fit and active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. I know personally that it isn’t always easy to find time for exercise, but taking 45 or 60 min to jump on a bike and jam out a workout at Flywheel is SO worth it. The fun atmosphere, expert instructors who push you to your best and the overall feeling of accomplishment make this sweat session a blast.

Today is World Health Day and I challenge you to get out and spend some quality time being active and healthy. Round up those endorphins and treat yourself to a healthy meal or two. The best thing about personal health and a little fitness? There’s no feeling better than getting it done!

Flywheel is my chosen “me time” for fitness during the week when I’m not hitting the pavement. Everyones first class is always free and I’ve got a hunch that after your first ride, you’ll be hooked like me! It’s a no pressure zone and thats what makes the Flywheel experience different than most.

You’ll find me in the stadium most days because being fit is ALWAYS fashionable.

VITAL Fitness Studio Softly Opens at The Joule

Hotelier, Restauranteur and now fitness guru. Tim Headington is at it again with his latest physical addition to The Joule Hotel in Downtown Dallas. Partnering with skincare and wellness giant ESPA, Headington Companies quietly opened VITAL Fitness Studio this morning. The studio, run by manager David Pisanich is an all-in-one yoga, cardio and wellness machine.

A little backstory before I share all the class details. The subterranean space below TRAFFIC: Los Angeles on Main St. was previously a nightclub that catered to the EDM and dance genre crowd. It soon became a vacant space and while the rest of the block was being developed, Headington negotiated the downstairs area to tie into ESPA. It’s a perfect fit really. VITAL Fitness Studio uses the same mantras, scents and beliefs as the sister spa across the alley to enhance the fitness experience. Using pro instructors and techniques, Pisanich has crafted what is soon to become the new hot spot for yogis, cardio hounds and those looking to center themselves in subterranean serenity. Oh, and with a membership, the valet is always free too! No excuses on parking lateness.

Now, to the important stuff. This week as part of their soft opening, VITAL Studio is opening up their classes for free AND throwing in free valet at the hotel as well. As of now, these are the classes they have planned:

Monday

  • 7:15-8:15am Detox Flow
  • 11:30-12:20pm Energizing Flow
  • 12:45-1:35pm Core Fitness

Tuesday

  • 6:00am Energizing Flow
  • 11:30am Cardio Sculpt
  • 12:45pm Soothing Yoga
  • 5:00pm Detox Yoga
  • 6:30pm Ashtanga Full Primary Led

Thursday

  • 5:00-6:00pm Ashtanga Improv
  • 6:30-7:45pm Restorative Yoga

Pisanich noted that there is a definitive pricing set and schedule soon to follow, but this is a great start! So get in there this week and try out the classes for free before this place fills up as Dallas’ new favorite fitness craze.

Spin Cycle Central

Walking into the Flywheel stadium at their Highland Park location, I was a bit intimidated. Sexy 20 and 30 somethings, star athletes and fitness buffs flock to this mecca of spin to get their daily workout high. As the cycle and spin phase tightens its grips into a global sensation,  Flywheel has its fingers on the pulse. Our fearless flying captain, Mark, made sure that we had all the prep we needed before the ride. Helpful employees walk their paces around the room to adjust, give tips and prepare us for the ride ahead as we climb on our bikes and let the gears spin. Flywheel provides the shoes and towels as well! The music picks up and the lights lower until its just you and the music, oh and the constant stirring of the stationary bikes letting off their energetic hums.

mark

By definition, Flywheel means ‘an object which releases stored energy by applying torque to a mechanical load, thereby decreasing its rotational speed.’ This ‘torque’ of which the literal meaning speaks of gets adjusted during the class based on hill climbs, descents and even races. Yes, races. A couple times during the class when the spin grabs a hold of you, the Flywheel instructors encourage a little friendly competition. Before the class you can enter a username to be used on a board that displays your place in the pack up front. During the intermediate races, you are literally spinning against your classmates. Never fear, the instructors repeatedly tell the class to work at their limits but don’t worry where the line up falls when the race ends. You see, at Flywheel, the trend is completing your class to the best of your ability.

Other studios in town may have trendiness on their side, but when it comes down to it, Flywheel has the best spin workout I’ve ever taken. Mark as our fearless leader kept me going bright and early until the very last bass drop.

As I mentioned in the previous post, Flywheel is hosting their FREE open house this week at the Plano location. They’ve just introduced FlyBarre and you can experience a FREE week of FlyWheel and FlyBarre September 25-29th. So don’t miss it!
