Remedy Brings Supper Solutions

IMG_4062IMG_4064IMG_4066IMG_4067IMG_4070 IMG_4069

Harken back to the simpler times with me, when eating good meant less about nouveau attitudes toward food prep and more about a damn good plate of food. Remedy on Lower Greenville brings the classic soda fountain spin into 2015. The menu is chockfull of classic American cuisine executed by a team led by former Grape chef and Top Cheftestant Danyele McPherson. The space, a modern take on the soda shops of long ago, is airy and welcoming with a dual-level dining room and plenty of cozy bar space to saddle up to.

When we wandered in early on a Friday evening, the restaurant was already bustling with straggling happy hour-ers and excited patrons like us. We began with a few cocktails off their ‘fountain’ menu. Remedy makes all their sodas in-house and after sampling a couple of them I may never be able to go back to mass-produced soda again. Not that I drank that much of it before. The ‘Brave Bird’ (Tequila Blanco, Grapefruit Soda, Meyer Lemon Syrup, Citrus) had great flavor and drinkablity. Normallyy tequila might be too much to begin the evening but in this case it was just right. The ‘Better Lemon’ (Meyer Lemon Soda, Suze, Gin, Champagne) was also fantastic with a bitter twist.

Sold starters and mains include slap your mama good Jalapeno-Chive Hushpuppies with NC hot sauce, a delicious rendition of a House filet o’ fish sandwich and a deep down good Cornbread Chili Pie. You really can’t go wrong with the food here. Every single plate we saw come out of the kitchen had the swoon factor and that to me says success for a newer restaurant.

Make absolutely sure to save room for the sweets at Remedy. Made fresh daily, the pies and sundaes will tickle that sweet tooth in all the right places. Order “The Bob” sundae with dark chocolate ice cream, potato chips, caramel, sea salt, whipped cream & a bing cherry or “The Tim Byres” made with vanilla & cornbread ice creams, vanilla poached apricots, smoked almonds & whipped cream. Damn, I am hungry again.

Put A Spork In It

Spork, a chef-driven roadside eatery opened last night in North Dallas. A funky place for burgers, salads, sandwiches, cocktails, shakes and malts (both boozy and virgin), Spork is a fast-casual, design-forward hangout. What started out as a daydream for chef Eric Justice (formerly of Mexican Sugar), has become a reality thanks to a band of spirited restauranteurs including James Beard award-winner chef Tim Byres, creative director Christopher Jeffers, Christopher Zielke and Karen Schultz all of Turn the Tables Hospitality and friends Sean Conner of Pie 2.14, Katherine Clapner of Dude, Sweet Chocolate, and Brad Borchardt of Expanding Palates.

Loosely inspired by the now shuttered Taylor’s Refresher in Napa Valley, Spork’s creative direction spawned from Christopher Jeffers. Jeffers is responsible for some of the city’s most unique spaces including SMOKE Plano, Chicken Scratch, The Foundry, and Bar Belmont in the Belmont Hotel.

The menu, curated and directed by Byres, includes American classics with Asian influence and allows Byres to exercise his range from fine dining to fast casual. Melding on the collaboration with Justce’s P.F. Chang’s and Pei Wei background, the menu vibe is “a message from space,” and features an unorthodox mix of fresh, fun and adaptable offerings. Signature items include bulgolgi kimchi fries, pretzel-crusted chicken tenders, and a California Korean dog. Spork will surely be known for the build-your-own burger and sandwich bar. Guests begin with a main (sirloin and brisket burger, buffalo burger, black bean & veggie burger, fresh fish, citrus-brined chicken, hot dog, grilled cheese, smoked bacon or roasted pork carnitas), and build their sandwich from 14 different cheeses and 13 house-made sauces.

The cocktail menu, curated by Sean Conner, incorporates Sonic’s iconic soda fountain and boasts an array of shakes, malts, draft cocktails, floats, and agua frescas featuring Sonic’s famous crushed ice.

Can’t wait to see this funky new addition to the Dallas dining scene come alive!

Bowl & Barrel Serves Up New Fare and Fun

DSC00885 DSC00888 DSC00890 DSC00893 DSC00902 DSC00903

I slipped off my boots last night and put on a pair of bowling shoes. One of my favorite places to blow off a little steam in Dallas is at Bowl & Barrel, the bowling alley/gastropub concept from the folks who brought you The Rustic and Mutt’s Canine Cantina.

Last night, they invited me in to bowl a few strikes (or at least attempt to) and try out their new food and beverage options. After stuffing my face with a few of their delicious bites and seeing my ball roll down the gutter a few too many times, I’m here to report back. Bowl & Barrel’s German-European infused menu will feature an even wider array of smorgas-boards, sausages, exotic shared plates, sandwiches, salads and more. In addition to these dishes, the boutique bowling alley will introduce several new cocktails to its repertoire.

Here are a few of my favorites to get your mouth watering.

Wagyu Steak & Blue Cheese Sandwich – Baguette, blue cheese mayo, watercress and ale glazed shallots.

Chicken Apple Club Sandwich – On sourdough bread with mayo, lettuce, tomato, avocado, green apples and bacon.

Chicken Salad – Green cabbage, kale, ghost pepper peanuts, fruit chutney, jicama, green apple and curry vinaigrette.

Green Chili Grilled Cheese – Jalapeño cheddar bread, muenster, american & green chili gravy.

Velvet Mule –Tito’s Vodka, Velvet Falernum, ginger beer and lime juice.

French Kiss – Prosecco, St. Germain, lemon juice and house-made Grenadine.

Head in and lace up your bowling shoes because the food that fuels the party is pretty darn fantastic.

Celebrate Super Bowl Sunday!

Instead of sitting over a crockpot of crusty queso and half-eaten frozen buffalo bites, take a tip from me. Sure you’ll wanna stuff your face in comfort, while cheering on the teams that have made their way to the big game after controversy. At least with my line up of celebratory situations you will be doing it in style.

Matt McCallister Set to Open Second Restaurant ‘Filament’ Spring 2015

ImageDallas’ Celebuchef favorite Matt McCallister, of FT33 in the Design District, is opening his second restaurant late this year. Here are the exciting details:

Matt McCallister, Chef/Owner of FT33, proudly announces his second restaurant, Filament. Filament will honor simply prepared ingredients of the South and is slated to open in Spring 2015 in Dallas’ Deep Ellum neighborhood.  Known for his naturalistic style and modern approach to seasonal fare at FT33, Chef McCallister’s Filament will hold true to the same philosophy, with a more casual approach to dining.

“The menu at Filament will be full of items that I eat on my own time. A couple of months ago I took a road trip with a couple members of my team and really thought about the food that is representative of our region,” says Chef McCallister. “Filament’s menu will be approachable, but not without the unexpected.  The menu I’m working on looks straightforward on paper, like Spicy Pork Sausage with fire roasted peppers, pickled onions, and yogurt.  There will be surprises, though.”

Filament’s large, horseshoe-shaped bar, which seats 24, will feature a selection curated by Managing Partner Jeff Gregory, who has created and maintains the award-winning beverage program at FT33. There will be a list of about 100 bottles of wine, a rotating lineup of craft beers on tap, and an inventive selection of seasonal cocktails.  An early look at the bar program hints at variations on the Julep, Sazerac, and Milk Punch, as well as an emphasis on use of preserved fruits.

The space was first an early 1900s machinist shop, and the restaurant will preserve parts of the original interior, including exposed brick walls and wooden beam ceilings. Filament’s industrial style fits with the vibe in Deep Ellum, a neighborhood known as a destination for local art, music, and more.

Filament, Chef Matt McCallister’s second Dallas restaurant will open for dinner in Spring 2015. The restaurant is located at 2626 Main Street in Dallas’ Deep Ellum neighborhood.”

Tex-Mex Chain ‘Primos’ Rises Again in Dallas

FullSizeRender

The Design District is known for it’s chic array of storefronts, restaurants and residential properties. Things are about to get kitschy and south-of-the-border soon though. Wandering through, I spotted a brand new sign in the former, failed Central Standard spot (now a shell) that read ‘Primo’s Tex-Mex‘. I tried hard to remember why that name sounded familiar and then I put two and two together.

Uptown Dallas’ beloved Tex-Mex joint closed back earlier last year but the chain is bringing back the burritos and beans to the Design District at 1400 Hi Line. Promises of $2 margarita tuesdays and half-burnt tacos haven’t been secured yet but who knows, we may see a different side to Dallas’ favorite ‘Primo’ this time around. More to come.

Brunching Bangkok Style

IMG_1544 IMG_1547 IMG_1548 IMG_1552

Newsflash, those earthquakes were just my stomach growling. Why? Because the new year means a new kind of brunch. The Dallas Design District is booming with exciting restaurant news and Pakpao Thai is holding its own.  The inaugural “Culinary Ambassador of Thai Cuisine,” Chef Jet Tila has fused a hefty dose of down-home Texas with authentic Thai flavors and quality ingredients for a unique brunch experience. I know what you’re thinking, why would you step away from waffles, biscuits and gravy or endless mimosas. Well it’s simple, and I’ll start with the best part. Pakpao’s Thai Bloody Mary Bar. Mimosas more your thing? On our brunch outing we experienced $1 mimosas that packed a punch.

Supposing you might need something to soak up the booze at brunch, Tila’s offerings are differently delicious. A staple for breakfast and lunch in many Asian countries, crispy pork congee. Its a porridge dish that has hints of spicy sweet goodness for a more savory start to your day. Another traditional favorite, the thai omelette. It was a soft cloud of eggs with crispy edges and distinguishing flavor. The Thai Tea French Toast was delicious topped with berries and a super sweet coconut syrup. Going in for the pineapple and coconut pancakes as well because they might be my new favorite pancakes ever. Yep, I said it. Chef Jet Tila’s “Texas-Thai” weekend brunch menu is served Saturday and Sunday.
