Joseph Palladino is a Dallas known name. The restaurant mogul behind such names as Nick & Sams and Coal Vines has brought some amazing concepts to our city. Now he brings a new concept to the brand spanking ‘can still smell the paint drying’ block of restaurants at the Omni Dallas. Enter, Biergarten, a casual new restaurant and bar by Palladino. I snuck in today at lunch during their quiet soft-opening to get a peek into what you can expect to find and dine on when you try it out!

Biergarten is the kind of place you come in, find draft upon draft of beer, an open kitchen with hand carved meats, German delights and an awesome dining area. You’ll be happy to know, too, that the bar opens onto a 190-person wraparound patio that looks out toward downtown. So you can have your beer and brat with a view. The menu is straightforward. On my visit in I tried the Bratwurst which comes with your choice of sweet peppers, sauerkraut, hot peppers or grilled onions. There are also some different variations like cracked pepper, chicken and sun-dried tomato or sweet/hot Italian sausage. More in the mood for something heartier? The Chicken Schnitzel will suit you fine. You get to pick a pairing of french fries, Joe’s favorite potato salad, Biergarten Cole Slaw or Soup of the day. The chicken was super flavorful and the crust was just right when topped with my preferred spicy mustard.  Happy hour is especially great with free bratwursts and 1/2 priced beer from 4:30-6 Monday-Friday.

The Biergarten has real spirit. I was blown away by the amount of detail in the decor and tap-lined bar. I mean, you feel like you’re really in Germany. Special care is taken to the hand carved meats in the open kitchen that end up on sandwiches like Corned Beef, Pastrami, Turkey or Ham Rueben on locally made rye bread. There’s even a burger that pays tribute to Nick & Sams!

So my friends, head to Dallas’ new favorite ‘garten and sample the lot of brews, German fare and take in the ambience. Prost!

Barter Uptown Wins at Happy Hour

On Tuesday, Barter Uptown started it’s Happy Hour program. On Thursday, I fell in love with it.

Little did I know when I ventured in for post work cocktails that I would stumble upon what is sure to become my favorite happy hour in town. They’re calling it the “3-5-7 HH” and it happens Monday – Friday from 3-6.

The breakdown? $3 for any beer; $5 for any specialty cocktail, and $7 for any wine by the glass! Why does this happy hour rule? At $30 a glass for Piper-Heidsieck Rose, it might normally be a pocket pincher. Not during happy hour my friend. That fancy pants glass of bubbly will run you just $7. And that expertly crafted Sazerac (Knob Creek Rye Or Germain-Robin Craft Method Peychaud’s Bitters, Tenneyson Absinthe Rinse, Lemon Zest) regularly priced at $13, goes to just $5. Beer is a steal too with all of the amazing, rotating brews.

Now, it may seem like Barter Uptown is doing themselves a disservice by offering such deals on booze. The real secret here lies in the fact that after a few of these drink steals, you’ll need something to fill that rumble in your tummy. Go for the Carrot “Home Fries” topped with Goat Cheese, Fresno Chilies. They offer a spicy kick and a creamy, cheesy bite. The Poutine is also a happy hour winner. This north of the border novelty will have you happy with Wild Turkey Gravy, Cheddar Curds. A third option would be to go with the special, off-the-menu charcuterie board that Chef Andrew Dilda keeps in season. The current feature is Lamb Prosciutto, but who knows how long that supply will last!

So, Dallas, here’s where the challenge comes in. With the weekend looming and 6 more hours of discounted libations ahead of you to warm up, what will you order? See you at Barter Uptown where the magic numbers are 3,5,7.

Good Food, Live Music in Uptown at The Rustic: Opening this Spring

What happens when a Texas music legend, meets a couple of restaurant partners and they visit Uptowns’ West Village district? Enter The Rustic.  A brand new restaurant and live music venue coming this spring to West Village. Read on for details…

Free Range Concepts partners, Josh Sepkowitz and Kyle Noonan announce their newest project, The Rustic, scheduled to open Spring of 2013 in Uptown at the prime corner lot of Lemmon Avenue and North Central Expressway in the West Village area.  Sepkowitz and Noonan, the team behind Bowl & Barrel, have partnered with Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, Pat Green and local businessman Brian Manion to open a full service restaurant and bar that will feature a dynamic outdoor “backyard” for eating, drinking and listening to live music.

“The Rustic will be a place to relax and socialize with friends and family and will be known for its three distinct qualities: great music, a vibrant patio and an excellent dining experience,” explains Sepkowitz.

With a live music venue outside, The Rustic will be able to provide a form of entertainment that few restaurant concepts can offer. The size and layout of the patio will offer the flexibility to accommodate both casual dining and large outdoor concerts, yet the primary focus of The Rustic will always be exceptional food and drinks.

Celebrated chef, Sharon Hage will be working with The Rustic team to develop the menu.  Noonan explains, “We will showcase kitchen and bar menus with roots reaching deep into the Texas soil. We are committed to using only beef, poultry and game from local ranchers, produce from local farmers, and the largest selection of Texas beers found anywhere.”  The Rustic will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week.

According to Neal Sleeper, President of Cityplace Company, the master developer of the area, “We have wanted to add a live music venue in the West Village area for many years.  The site selected for this new project has several beautiful old post oaks, and the site contours provide a natural amphitheater with Uptown Station and the trolley turntable as a backdrop.  The Rustic will add a great deal of energy to the area and we are thrilled to welcome them to the neighborhood.”

Certain to be one of the coolest things to happen to Uptown in quite sometime, I can’t wait to see what this does for the area. Dallasites have always proven to have an affinity for Green and his folk country music. Add that together with some good cookin and a blazing bar and The Rustic can’t miss.

Flagship Dave & Busters Opens in Dallas

It’s here. 45,000 square feet of games, dining, bar space and billiards has finally (re)arrived in Dallas. The brand new flagship Dave & Busters opens it’s doors today, and it’s unlike anything else I’ve experienced in this town. Knowing the roots of the now 30 year old brand, it’s locations are known to be a stirred pot of excitement from all angles. This opening and new location has been no different.

I was treated to a media tour, lunch and grand opening party this weekend and having a bit a of a past with D&B, it’s nostalgia at its best. In 1982, Dave and Busters brought it’s first Dallas location to the 75 and Walnut hill ‘restaurant row’ corridor. President and COO Dolf Berle walked us through the re-imagined location and really provided us a great view into the vision for the new location. There’s a billiard room, huge dining room, 3 individual “fun”ction rooms for meetings and of course the gaming space. With new games like “Doodle Jump” and “Fruit Ninja (yes the iPhone apps have been turned into life size games) and old favorites like Skee Ball, the claw game and Hoop Shooting…real creative juice went into providing a childhood boost to the older crowd. The new location will be 18 and up past 10PM most nights to provide a more “adult atmosphere”, Berle said.

The real surprise came when we started tasting menu items. The Lawnmower salad (D&B cobb) was HUGE and could easily be split. Small bites like the Pretzel dogs, miniature hot dogs wrapped in sweet pillowy dough, were a hit! The South Philly burger, a combo of you guessed it a Philly cheesesteak and hamburger is sure to fill you up. A Fire grilled salmon(cajun spices and 4 peppercorn sauce) served with sautéed spinach and rice was a light and tasty treat. The brand new bistro steak and shrimp in lobster Alfredo sauce was quite decadent for my taste but others enjoyed. Sweet treats include vanilla and chocolate doughnut minis, bananas foster cake and a chocolate indulgence.

Same rules apply for the games here. Charge up that Power Card and head to one of hundreds of game choices. Once you’ve racked up your coupon loot, make your way to the winners zone to claim your prize. Heck, there’s even and iPad for 120,000 coupons but you might be saving up for that one. Cocktails are a plenty here for a fun group night out or one to sip while the kids play. This new location is snazzy and pretty, and not surprisingly popular with the younger ones…but if your inner kid beckons, shove a big serving of Dave and Busters in its face and call it a day!

Seasonal Cocktails & Happy Hour: Private|Social

For those of us who enjoyed a classed up Happy Hour, I bring you yet another spot to put on your radar for that gleeful 2 hours where rules don’t apply. Private|Social is the best kept secret in the world of crafted cocktails and delicious ‘Top Chef’ed cuisine and now, from 5-7 M-F, all cocktails and social bites at 1/2 off.

Last night, I was invited in by the lovely folks at P|S to sample Rocco Milano’s new seasonal cocktail specials and nosh on tastes of Tiffany Derry’s social side sharing plates. If you find yourself craving a libation that dates older than dear old “nana” with a modern twist that will make your brows raise in delight, come to Private|Social. Milano rules the bar and with the help of his skillful barkeeps, he’ll serve you one hell of a happy hour(s)!

Favorites of mine included a Pear Collins (Pear infused Tito’s vodka, hibiscus cherry *housemade* bitters, housemade hops and a splash of soda)

Le Noir (Grey Goose Cherry Noir, citrus juices, housemade grenadine and blueberries and bit of bubbly)

Ginger Mule which replaces the typical vodka with Gin.

Rocco is also easing himself into a set of beer cocktails like the Fall Into A Glass made with Gin, Hum Botanical Spirit, a squeeze of lemon and splash of Franconia Hefeweizen. Yum!

Dont worry, there were snacks as well! The whole social side shared plates menu goes 1/2 from 5-7 as well and the offerings are quite tasty.

The Lamb Meatballs with spicy marinara, goat cheese and crusted bread were rustic, warm and an amazing pairing.

Don’t miss the Korean BBQ Short ribs with sweet & spicy cucumbers either.

Perfect for after work, escaping the holiday craze or just plain drinks and snacks. Private|Social has you covered.
