Sunday Supper at Stampede 66

Each Sunday at Stampede 66 by Stephan Pyles, the dial gets turned back on the busy week and folks sit down to partake in a very Texan tradition. Sunday Supper has become a staple addition to the service line up at Pyles’ “Modern Texas” hot spot and fills up every week. The full menu is available, of course, but if you’re looking for a chance to sit back, relax and enjoy the slower paced day that separates us from the rush of the week then go with the 3-course meal option. That’s right, there is a set menu for Sunday Supper. While the menu has varied in the past, Pyles layers on the familiar Texas dishes re-interpreted with a contemporary twist.  I’m also told a new Executive Chef was in training the evening we stopped in, exciting!

We handed over the reigns to our waiter who quietly swept in and our during our time at Stampede 66 so that we could enjoy the conversation and ambience. Our meal began with the starter course of  Burnt Ends Tacos with a tangy Blue Cheese Slaw. Juicy meat, in house made and soft as-all-get-out tortillas and slaw meet up for a happy bite to start supper. A salad course of Heirloom Tomato-Melon Salad, Candied Pecans, greens and pickled red onion was a nice palate cleanse and fresh spin on the beginning impressions.

It’s a needed respite that Pyles has created in the space between Uptown and Downtown. While the Dave Alexander Band roams the room and strums to the sweet sounds of Sunday Supper, diners congregate at large tables to catch up.

Our main courses came after a short while. The mains are served family style in true traditional Sunday setting. You’ll get Honey Fried Chicken, Smoked Ribs and a seasonal pan Roasted Gulf Catch. The fried chicken has been rated best in Dallas and I’ll not be able to contest that honor after dining. Crispy, brined and coated with deliciousness, the bird makes me a very happy southern born boy.  Served alongside Buttermilk Biscuits smattered with warm honey and butter, it don’t…doesn’t get much better than this!

The ribs and catch became an after thought but still carried their own when I remember they were there. Damn good chicken! The entrees sided with all you can eat Creamed Corn and Macaroni Pasta Salad.

One doesn’t escape Sunday Supper without a sweet ending. Keith Cedotal and his team have created two perfectly split-worthy desserts for the Sunday meal. Our meal ended with a Mexican Chocolate Cake with Spicy Caramel that was a little too dense for my liking but the Lemon Meringue Tart was a nice citrus note.

Now you’re wondering, what might this 3-course Sunday Supper set you back? A deal at $35, this meal had us happily full after the 3 courses. I’d strongly advise those who decide to venture in to make reservations. Enjoy Sundays with Stephan.
