Cowtown Cravings: Brunch at AF + B

Industrial, modern and chic are the first descriptive words that come to mind when you step inside Consilient Hospitality’s latest opening, AF + B. This Fort Worth newcomer is detailed in style and appeals to the eye in every way. With small touches of its surrounding city worked in, the space really lends itself to the local offerings on the menu and overall rustic feel of Fort Worth.

AF+B is a lively neighborhood tavern that thrives off the celebration of American food and beverage today. I was invited in for brunch recently, and I found that celebratory spirit to live true. Comeback Creek Farm, Black Rooster Bakery items and more give diners a glimpse into the localized efforts of Chef Jeff Harris and his team.

We began with an assortment of fresh breakfast pastries that included scones and a delicious nutty banana muffin. The pastries paired well with deliciously whipped butter and seasonal strawberry preserves. It was really a treat to have a bite of warm scone and really taste the bits of strawberry running throughout the jam. The pastry spread was truly a fresh and wholesome start to the meal. Of course, any good brunch has it’s beverages and the table side french press was a delightful partner with the basket of carb filled goodness. A rich and dark blend of beans made for a great pot of joe.

Next we sampled the Chorizo Scotch Eggs which came with a confetti of oil cured chiles and cilantro. A bitter bite of pepper went well with the salty egg and chorizo. I assumed this appetizer would spoil my appetite, but it was a shared plate that left enough room for more.

For mains, we decided upon the classic french toast with whipped creme fraiche, strawberries, rhubarb, toasted hazelnuts and maple syrup. Gigantic slices of local brioche took center plate and with each slice, the smooth tart-sweet blend of rhubarb and strawberry worked nicely. Crunchy hazelnuts and a dab of syrup caused this indulgence to be well worth every calorie. A recommended second main dish, the American breakfast was the savory punch I was looking for.  Comprised of soft scrambled farm eggs, house-made bacon and to-die-for rosemary hash browns, the plate was simple yet the modification and addition of local herbs and produces into the components made it quite perfectly different.

I know I’ll need to try the Smoked Brisket Hash and Egg Sandwich next time I visit, but AF + B has a way of charming during this quintessential weekend meal.

The service (ask for Jen!) was enjoyable and knowledge filled about purveyors used and the overall brunch experience is worth the drive from Dallas or around the corned in Fort Worth. Don’t miss this new favorite of mine, and browse the city while you’ve got the chance.

Zegna Makes Measurable Fashion Impact on Dallas

Nearly one month ago, the brand new Zegna store opened in the bustling Highland Park Village shopping district. Created by Zegna’s in-house architects, the design is based on the creative concept developed by architect Peter Marino for the Zegna global store in Milan. The store covers 1,776 square feet of luxury selling space in Highland Park Village, home to an unprecedented collection of renowned brands.

This store has made a sizable impact on the way that mens fashion in Dallas is conceived. With its famous ‘Upper Casual’ and ‘Sartorial’ collections and their complementing accessories lines including small and large leather goods along with watches and fragrance, Zegna stands out. The Sartorial room in the store, with its rich detailing, also hosts the exclusive ‘Su Misura’ Made-to-Measure service.

The Dallas store’s beautifully crafted design and sophisticated elegance echo the brand’s use of quality materials and modern style.  Nature and technology are harmoniously blended through the masculine yet natural color palette created using rosewood, mahogany and both gun and bronze metal. Upon entering the store, clients see a stunning video installation with the seasonal Milan runway collections.

For locals in the style know, this store will be a mecca for sartorially chic and dapper fashion. Celebrities such as Dallas Cowboy’s own Miles Austin, DeMarco Murray and DeMarcus Ware have warmly welcomed the brand to the market and the shopper list is soon to grow.

Crescent City State of Mind

After getting back from a whirlwind trip to The Big Easy, I wanted to share my adventures with you. Now this wasn’t my first trip to NOLA but it had certainly been a while since I laissez “le bon temps rouler“. What I found after a few years is that New Orleans is the kind of city that you can make the experiences you have whatever you want them to be. Certainly loved its carefree spirit and highly trafficked watering holes, New Orleans has a refined side that truly charms and pleases with every turn.

Inspired by the culinary masterminds of NOLA, I found myself suddenly craving all things creole. Upon arriving to the city, I somehow forgot how those southeastern winds can blow like the jazz brass the city is known for. I didn’t let that chilly breeze slow me down though. While wandering the Uptown area, an early morning stop into the Maple Street Patisserie filled my nostrils with fresh baked bread and pastries. How could I resist? It’s true what they say, pastries and breads bring a memory to you from another time or another place–a time when baked goods were a marvel of ingenuity and simplicity. At the Maple Street Patisserie, Master Chef Ziggy’s carb filled goodies and a cup of chicory blend coffee aren’t to be missed.

I made my way over to the Garden District to do some sightseeing and stumbled upon a hot spot. Any fans of the cult show, American Horror Story: Coven will know this house to be the focal point of the season and I couldn’t help but snap a few pictures of the shooting location where most of the action happens. New Orleans is a hot bed of film and television backdrops given its historical and architectural depth and uniqueness.

While in the district, a certain stirring in my stomach took over control. Some call it the Southern sensation, and in New Orleans its unavoidable. Lunch time! Hailed as one of the must-try restaurants in town, La Petite Grocery is one of the finest lunches I’ve experienced. Chef Justin Devillier (currently competing on Top Chef: New Orleans) has created a menu that indulges but doesn’t put you quite over the top. During lunch we sampled Blue Crab Beignets (malt vinegar aioli), the Shrimp Roll (crab roe butter, pickled red onion with house-made frites), and a Pork Cheek Ruben (Russian Dressing, Pickled Red Cabbage on Rye). Everything we tried was delicious.  A playful reuben rendition and the creamy blue crab beignets won us over.

We retired back to our hotel after a long walk in the French Quarter and a post lunch visit to Jackson Square establishment Cafe Du Monde. There is entirely too much to see in the short amount of time I spent in the city, but around every corner and along every Rue, there is something to behold.

Anxiously awaiting our dinner plans, we made our way over to another bucket-list restaurant. John Besh has a created an eatery empire in New Orleans, and we had reservations at one of his most famous stops Domenica. The name means “Sunday” in Italian, and partners John Besh and Alon Shaya have created a restaurant in the renovated historic Roosevelt Hotel.

We began with a few good libations, I went with a classic Cointreau Rickey which was perfectly tart and bubbly. For dinner, we decided on the Two Run Farms Lamb Bolognese (tahini & za’atar crostini), Covey Rise Baby Greens (apples, goat cheese & crispy prosciutto), Arugula (beets, gorgonzola & pistachios) to begin. They are famous for their ‘pizza’ so we gave in and had a split Prosciutto (tomato, fresh mozzarella & arugula) and Spicy Lamb Meatballs (tomato, ricotta, rapini & mint) We couldn’t pass up the sweets so we went with the Warm Apple “Spongata” (honey, spice & creole cream cheese) of which we savored every spoonful. Besh has made his mark in several niche restaurant scenes and this dinner was greatness.

The food coma set in the next morning and all I could think was “What’s for breakfast?”. A quaint cafe, Stanley, off Jackson Square answered soundly. So, in true Fat Tuesday fashion we indulged one last time. This go around it was the Stanley Classic (Scrambled Eggs, Smoked Bacon, Creole Breakfast Potatoes, and Whole Wheat Toast), Pancakes (Vanilla Ice Cream and Louisiana Cane Syrup) and the Eggs Benedict Poor Boy (Poached Eggs, Smoked Canadian Bacon and Creole Hollandaise on Toasted French Bread) that had our stomachs screaming uncle. Happy and full, we meandered the area and checked in on Brad Pitt’s Make it Right project that is rebuilding the Lower 9th ward.

Nola, I thank you for the sights, smells and tastes that had me lingering long enough to crave my Dallas home. Until next time! C’est La Vie.

Max’s Dallas Brings ‘Gluten’ Friendly Fried Chicken

What better way to celebrate the Holiday weekend and the prime of cookout season with fried chicken. Max’s Wine Dive in Uptown hears the call of those who wish they could tear into a juicy piece of fried chicken, but can’t because of a gluten intolerance. Presenting, gluten friendly fried chicken in celebration of national fried chicken day.

MAX’S gluten friendly Fried Chicken is made with a blend of gluten free flour and dried cauliflower fibers, which create a fried-like coating, and is served with mashed potatoes and collard greens. In order to maintain a high level of quality, the gluten friendly Fried Chicken is fried in a separate fryer and prepared in an independent area, where exposure to gluten is less likely to occur.

I know what you’re thinking, “Where’s the fat free fried chicken so that I can chow down endlessly on my favorite southern cooking and maintain my summer body?!”. Friends, Dallasites, lend me your ear…baby steps. For now, head over to Max’s and get your fried chicken and gluten-friendly fried chicken on.
